Gazment Bardhi, head of the Democratic Party’s parliamentary group, on Monday accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of political captivity, following the Socialist Party’s decision to oppose SPAK’s request to lift Belinda Balluku’s parliamentary immunity.
“The decision of the ‘Supreme Court of the Republic – the Socialist Party’ not to allow the lifting of Belinda Balluku’s immunity confirms what we have said from the very first day: Edi Rama is a hostage of Belinda Balluku,” Bardhi wrote on social media.
He argued that Rama is “caught in the trap of corruption that he himself has built” and therefore unable to govern freely. Bardhi further contended that by blocking the prosecution’s request, Rama had abandoned his decade-long posture as a justice reformer. “He would not be forced, ten years after the adoption of the justice reform, to remove the propagandistic mask of the reformer and become the main obstacle to justice,” Bardhi wrote.
Balluku, a former deputy prime minister and infrastructure minister, faces charges from SPAK — the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organised Crime — of manipulating public procurement procedures in multiple road construction contracts. The Socialist majority is expected to vote against lifting her immunity in a parliamentary plenary session scheduled for March 12.
